Marek Edelman just died.

I was taught about him in school. He was a WWII hero. He was one of the leaders of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. After that he fought in Warsaw Uprising. He survived the war and all its horror but the story of his heroism didn't end then. After the war he became a doctor, a cardiologist and he saved people. And despite the persecution he didn't live Poland. I loved him for one of the reasons he gave  - he said it was too hot in Israel - someone who disliked heat just like me. He didn't believe in God. He was socialist but never joined the communist and instead he helped the opposition and became involved with Solidarity movement. His whole life was spent fighting for freedom and helping other people.

I used to think people like that existed only in novels but he lived in a city a couple hours drive away. He embodied the definition of hero to me.

Now he is no more.
