Last one had ravens, this time it's crows
Aug. 3rd, 2011 10:32 pmThe Subterranean Press is moving on with their special edition of Malazan Books of the Fallen and they are on the Deadhouse Gates. A month ago they published the cover for their version. The original cover is one of the best covers ever; one that's both a interesting as art and relevant to the story inside. It's often used as an example of perfect cover. So when they uncovered their cover last month it was a disappointment. Especially since the Gardens of the Moons cover was pretty awesome (see the icon).

I understand Michael Komarck is busy and couldn't do second tome but does this really mean we had to got stuck with half naked woman? Don't misunderstand me - it's a pretty good painting; just not for malazan cover. It's even hard to say who that supposed to be. Felisin? Shaik? Apsalar? And the reaction of the rest of the fandom was also uniformly not good so they changed it. The new version is much better. It's more easily identified as a scene from the book and is more similar to the GotM cover in style. This one I love:

And one got to love fandom centered around military, epic fantasy series, made mostly of guys which just prefers relevance and art to half naked girls on covers. I know this isn't one time thing as the US cover of GotM that was guilty of similar thing was so uniformly hated they removed the girl from the cover in paperback version and later made Tor change US cover to the UK one I mentioned before.
