Spending my time
Nov. 8th, 2011 11:54 pmI went to see In Time today. I had problem finding time to go to the movies lately but it doesn't look like it'll have a long life so I borrowed some. Luckily I won't have to pay with my life for it. (Sorry, I couldn't stop myself after watching 100 minutes of such puns). What you can learn from trailers is not cut as I don't consider it a spoiler - if you do don't read.
I'm not sure how I feel about the film. I mostly agree with what it was trying to say about society and capitalism but at the same time it was oversimplified and the solution was ridiculous. It was like John McClane trying to solve a financial system kind of fun but you know it wouldn't work. I think the closest to what I think about it is the io9 review of the movie. I agree with almost everything they say about it. I certainly didn't regret watching it but I felt that there were many things that were there just because it looked cool.
You know it is overdone when you take time to snicker at the difference in colouring between the poor (yellow/dry) and rich (blue/cold) worlds, the heroes so cliché you knew what they are going to do before they even get in a situation that will cause them to do it and Amanda Siefried character's insistence on running in super short skirts and extremely high heels all the time.
The thing I really liked was the worldbuilding. I'm always sucker for the interesting world. It's both chilling and perfectly logical to create system that will eliminate the excess population in a world where everyone is potentially immortal. It's also logical extension of capitalism to turn the lifespan into currency. After all, you can have eternity for free. However this also what made the heroes' solution so pointless. ( Spoilers )
I was also happy to see the eternally young. All these old people wearing young faces. This is all I keep reading about but haven't seen before. This (and the clock thing) seemed so obvious that I was surprised with complete lack of comprehension some had. Maybe it's because it is unsettling - even though I expected it and wanted to see it I felt unsettled by parents looking the same age as their kids. However, let's not pretend - if technology to stay young was here there is no way we wouldn't end up like this. Who would really want to look old? The raise in plastic surgery shows us the way it would go.
The other thing I liked is the technological stagnation. It's not only that the technology doesn't seem to progress behind the obviously not ageing, the clocks and some other things like electric cars and tracking time in real time (it makes sense if you see the movie). It's the fact that the things we take for granted are no longer present. ( Spoilers )
In Time proves again that creating nightmarish fake paradises is Niccol's strong suit. Too bad that this time plot and heroes were there only to showcase the idea. However, I liked the film despite it faults and I'm glad I decided to see it. I certainly didn't feel bored and it is nice to look at with all the pretty people.
