Once again we are on the crazy rollercoaster of temperatures. It's been pretty warm for past few days but another winter storm is coming. The temperatures will be dropping tomorrow and snow and ice is coming. They keep changing information about when exactly and how much but it can be anything from a deep cover of snow to turning everything in icicles. And most of the forecast agree the temperatures will never rise above freezing on Wednesday. I'm pretty sure it will also snow on Wednesday even though they are not sure yet. I know because I have to travel on Wednesday.

And these will have a chance to reform (no one turn off the fountains around here no matter how cold it gets)

At least the weather changes give us some spectacular clouds this winter

So I waited for this to happen through all the days with minus temperatures and it finally did. It snowed yesterday.

There is only couple of centimetres of it but the ground was still warm and the air was well below freezing so it melted on the bottom and the turned into ice covered by snow. Or that tightly packed snow that as, or maybe even more, slippery then ice. So I don't blame most of my labmates for not coming to work today. I saw what happen to a car when I was walking back home after taking those pictures and I'm happy the guy gave up before I had to pass him because his car was sliding randomly when he tried to go up.

Still the buses where running on time and I did all the things I had planned for today before I knew the snow was coming (plus photo session for winter). And I also finally did the shopping because after 2 days of panic shopping today people stayed home and I had nice empty store to myself (and couple of other people).

I know the poor Southerners don't agree but all the other Northern transplants like me agreed - snows makes everything better. So I try to enjoy it before it melts tomorrow. It's going to be +18 on Sunday.
ellestra: (charlie jade)
It was 5oC and the windchill made it feel even colder on Saturday. It was 18 on Monday. Sunny and warm. On Tuesday night temperature dropped below -10 and it felt even colder. It also snowed a tiny bit - just enough to freeze into frosting on cars and grass. It was below 0 during the day on yesterday and it's supposed to be again tomorrow. Then it will get warmer once again - up to +13 on Monday and then dip below 0 again on the next day.

It's not that I can't take the cold - I have the proper clothes and shoes and it's not that cold during the day. It's the temperature jumps that get me. As my brother said about the -12 during the day (-17 with windchill) weather that Poland has right now (the warmth is over) - at least when it's cold all the time you get used to dealing with it. Not that I want to have it as cold as it is in Poland now but if not for the wind the 0 to -5 day temp is my perfect winter weather. If only there was more snow I would be perfectly happy with it lasting for few weeks.
But my winter looked like this for one morning in supper snowy spot:                   This is my brother's winter:

And of course it's still cold in my apartment. I can barely make it go up to 19oC and it's usually around 18when I wake up. It's not fun sitting in such temperature. At least when I'm running around in my down jacket and UGGs and all that bothers me is the wind putting tears in my eyes. But if I were back home those tears would freeze so this is still nicer. But then I remember how far south I am and realise once again how much milder European climate is.

Think about this - Londoners are less likely to have cold weather like this then me here in subtropics. They can have flowers in their gardens that are more susceptible to cold. Of course for all of us the rarity of these events comes from the Global Warming. England used to have snowy winters - now it snow causes panic. Most of the US that is now hyperventilating about cold used to have days of weather like this every winter. It's just after a while the new weather patterns become normal and the ones that used to be normal become exceptional (see this post for nice graphics on this EDIT: And the new xkcd is perfectly on topic too). And then you call off the climate change because it's cold outside for few days. Even when the other hemisphere is melting from deadly heat (and I mean deadly - animals were dying in Australia including fruit bats falling dead from trees in temperatures reaching 50oC - I can't even fully comprehend 50 but it makes me happy about -5 here).

I know a lot of people in Poland who complain about the cold and cloudiness but I think I was born to be northern European. I hate heat and 30-something is already too much for me but I'm also not really good with the temperatures below -10 - my eyes water and fingers freeze. I want to have seasons but without too many weather extremes and it's hard to accomplish that in continental climates.
ellestra: (lightning)
It was over 25 oC on Friday. People went back to wearing shorts and flip-flops and we were all overheating. It was still humid and hot during the night and I couldn't cool down my apartment even with the balcony door open wide. It was too hot to sleep and finally after 1 am I gave up and switched AC on too cool the place down. When I woke up on Saturday it was colder and I had to turn the the heating back on and go back to wearing warm jacket. Today it was barely 3 oC the whole day and it drizzled non-stop. Tomorrow - it goes back to 15 oC.

It's not that I mind the weather. Although cold, drizzling rain and clouds all day and mud everywhere is that exact type weather that makes Poland in November so depressing. There is no light, no warmth and there is even no snow. I know that this is usually a cause for panic around here but I would rather have snow. If it was snowing I'd be spending today outside running around and taking photos. With all the Christmas lights already on it'd be so nice. Instead it's just ugly.

I know that this complains seem trivial compared to the devastation that the orcan Xaver did to Northern Europe. My uncle send me picture of repairs they had to do when a tree fell and destroyed the roof. The winds in some parts of Europe reached over 220 km/h and toppled trees and overturned cars and the combined with ocean surge caused floodings and even pushed several homes off the cliff. People hundred of thousands of people lost power in Poland and with it many lost heating - including my parents. But they were lucky as they got it back the same day. Those who didn't had to face snowstorms that came after in cold and darkness. But most complains I hear is about all those people who still didn't change tire for winter ones in their cars because it's been warm so far.

It's only slightly better in the most of the US. For some reason south east was the only part not covered by the big chill. Temperatures are dropping below freezing in California with Californians are experiencing ice and frost in the mornings sometimes for the first time. It snowed on the west side of the country all the way down to Texas on Thursday and Friday and been moving east and today the snowstorms hit the East Coast.

However, the sudden and large changes in temperatures - we went from basically summer weather to almost winter in two days and it's to get warm again and then cold again next week - are already causing people all around me to fall sick. And winter is only starting.
ellestra: (lightning)
When I was leaving home yesterday it still felt warm. It was a nice autumn day with few clouds. When I was leaving work I walked into November. Just like all the forecasts said - it god cold and drizzled that tiny, warmth-sucking rain that's the worst kind of weather. I'd rather it snows. And eventually it did. Later at night it got cold enough for the rain to turn into snow. It didn't last - ground is too warm and it melted as soon as it touched anything. Still, it snowed here in November.

Today was cold, sunny and very dry and the temperature has already dropped below freezing. And it feels even colder. It's supposed to get warmer until weekend ends and then it's supposed to get cold again. I was told it snow in November only happens every 15 years or so but this was a cold year in general and it looks like we are for a cold and early winter this year.

This will be my 5th (4.5) winter here. The first two where pretty snowy and my first December here was the coldest on record with early snow which supposedly also comes every several years. The third one skipped winter all together and went straight from autumn to spring. Last one was very warm until it got cold just as we all expected spring to start. Since then we had a lot of days with cold wind blowing from the north bringing colder then usual temperatures and it seems like it's still going strong. It might be my coldest and snowiest winter here. I can't wait. The panic this creates here never stops being amusing.

Well, until it turns out I have to go to that training in Boston and experience the real winter there. Winter temperatures there are similar to Warsaw but with more windchill and more snow. So I'd rather not do cold winter in Boston.
ellestra: (sunrise)
Today was finally the kind of day we should heave this time of year. It was sunny and 25C. I saw people swimming in the pool so the season can be called officially open. My parent skyped me happy that it finally got warm in Poland too. Just a week ago - on Easter Sunday they had a big snowstorm. Everything covered with at least 20cm of snow turning world into Winter Wonderland. Just on the wrong Holidays (people were making snow Easter bunnies and even, in some cases, decorating spruces all over again in their back yards - just adding eggs this time).

This is one of the photos he send me:

And then it snowed some more. Luckily it ended just for this weekend and my parents say it was sunny and warm (up to +10 in the sun) and it finally felt like spring.

Here it's been like spring for a while now. At least as far as plat blooming is concerned. And of course weather is sunny much more often than in Poland. However it was also unseasonably cold this year (March was colder then January). Even this Thursday was rainy and barley reaching 5C. But this weekend was very nice and in forecast prognoses 27-28C on Tuesday and Wednesday so our first heat wave is almost here.

The nice weather meant I spent the weekend doing things outside. I went to the botanical garden to look at blooms and take photos and then I re-potted the flowers. I went for a long walk today. Of course asthma doesn't like that so now all my muscles hurt as if I was actually exercising. My doctor would not be happy but I can't take any more drugs. I try to navigate a middle road between asthma and the side effects.

Still I'm sure that at least some of you this will make feel jealous:
ellestra: (sunrise)
It finally got warm here. Just in time for holidays (in US Monday isn't a day off but at least here Friday is). It was warm and sunny today. I was even running around in just a t-shirt and it was just a little cool. It supposed to be even warmer in next 3 days (22C on Monday) although, in March tradition, it is to rain on Sunday. Even long term prognosis looks good (just one day of cold rain on Tuesday) but if we get cold rain it probably means another round of snow up North.

The March was colder then January here. In Poland (and rest of northern Europe) it is still winter. The snow melted on Christmas but they are having White Holidays on Easter. A week ago it was -15 at night. Today it snowed again. I would wish everyone spring for Easter but all is there in forecast is more snow and snow/rain mix with temperatures barely above 0 during day. So I just wish for the Jetstream to finally move and let the warm air in.

ellestra: (lightning)
We started having moments of good weather. Previous weekend. This Saturday. Today. Sunny and warm. Very warm even. And then it gets cold again. Today it was 19oC, tomorrow 13 and on Thursday just 7 and -4 at night. Of course compared to home this is spring in full bloom. Poland is still covered in snow and there is -11 in the forecast for Saturday night. All everyone does when I talk to them is complaining about winter and why the spring hasn't come yet. And not just in Poland but even in here as both places have unseasonably cold weather for the season. But at least here it looks like spring as everything is blooming, including the trees so my asthma is going crazy and that drives my doctor to overdrive because she cannot stop hearing weezing in my lungs.

It was only 4oC during the day yesterday. And cloudy with drizzle and wind. One good thing about it was that was the day I got my got my follow up on asthma and an ophthalmologist visit. And the cloudy weather weather helped with the diluted irises (although my vision was still crazy blurry - I couldn't see my own signature but waiting for it to go away gave me time to listen to Neverwhere). The oral steroids they gave me for the lung inflammation caused some weird things to my vision (I got a little problem with focusing - seems to happen slower then it should). After hour and half of questions and tests I learned I have a good sight, my eyes are in very good condition but the steroids can cause redistribution of liquid in the eye that can lead to swelling of the lens and focusing problems. Just another fun addition to the asthma related problems. It's supposed to go away after I stop taking prednisone (it is already little better as I'm tapering off the drug). So fun. Tomorrow, another follow-up.

Yesterday it was +16 and sunny. Today it snowed the whole day. It was still too warm for the snow to last so it turned to water as soon as it touched anything but after several hours of this the grass and roofs were covered with a little batches of white. But it's only supposed to get below freezing late at night today so even though it's going to get quite cold (-6) all that will be left tomorrow is ice. Still being hit with snow, even instantly melting one, beats drizzle.

This strange cycling of (very) warm and cold weather leads to sights like this with a lot of trees blooming already (this is magnolia) being suddenly covered with snow (or ice). I'm just afraid that all the flowers will die during this two cold nights before it gets warmer again on Monday.

ellestra: (lightning)
First it snowed. Just a little bit but, since it was, below 0 and even below -2 the whole day, the snow stayed on the ground. Then it rained. The cold rain that would be freezing if not for the ground still being pretty warm. Then the rain froze and the sky started dropping tiny ice balls. I was technically hail but hail hits hard and this was just like being showered with rice but with tiny ice balls instead of rice. They were gently tapping on clothes and windows and then falling on everything to be frozen together with the rain. By 4 p.m. everything was covered by sheet of ice.

The grass was crunchy underneath the feet. The cars and other vehicles and plants and fences were all glazed. Luckily, the surface of the ice on the roads was rough (because it was made of walls) so it wasn't so bad to walk on it in my winter shoes. But I live in the hilly area and I saw a lot of car unable to drive up the hill I live on. I was afraid the same thing would happen to my bus so went home early - just after 4.

The streets were almost completely abandoned by then. There was much less people on the streets that day anyway. Everyone knew the forecast and it well was below freezing all day - the first time since I came here almost exactly 3 years ago - so there wasn't a lot of cars to start with. However, between 4 and 5 on Friday shouldn't look like middle of the night. It lasted till almost noon next day when the ice started to finally melt as the temperature got above 0.

I understand that hills + no experience driving in such weather + no winter tires means it's both scary and dangerous. Still part of me secretly laughs inside. Especially since back in Poland was once again below -10 during the day and so much snow they clear roofs on supermarkets so they don't collapse.

Just look:

The days are warm now 5-8c but nights are still couple degrees below freezing so what water is left freezes all over again. And there is another freezing rain warning for tonight.

The funny part is that it's supposed to be over +20 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Even funnier - the Poland is getting similar big worm up next week - from -15 to +8 in few days. No wonder everyone is sick.

Snow

This is outside right now. It's not going to last as it's already raining more than snowing. It may turn into ice as the forecast predicts minus temperatures by morning but it's also finally is supposed to be sunny tomorrow so the ice won't last either. However, it just was over 20o couple days ago and there were sandals and shorts and t-shirts and now it's snowing. At least it's better then the rain that's been dropping down (and getting colder) for the past few days. So Snow, YAY.

ellestra: (sunrise)
When I cam back from Poland it was just a few degrees more here and the air was chilly and felt colder then it was. I spent last weekend home to make sure my laryngitis goes away and when I emerged on Monday the weather started changing. It started getting warmer and warmer and it got to +18 and sunny. Then it rained on Friday. This weekend was hot and humid. Temperature was 23 in shade during the day and due to clouds and humidity didn't drop below 15 at night. Even now, at almost midnight, it is 19C outside.

If not for short days and bare trees you could almost think summer is starting. Certainly all the people in shorts and t-shirts and flip flops behaved like it is.

It is unusually warm even for here and with rain and warmth plants are starting the spring already. I;ve seen first daffodils, magnolia's flower buds are almost ready to open. I've been putting a lot of photos here lately but part of me still cannot believe I was among snow and cold and now I have this outside:

You can see even plants are confused. The pink flowers are normal this time of year - they always bloom very early but rhododendron shouldn't start for months. It may prove deadly for those flowers as it's supposed to get colder again with temperatures dropping below freezing at night at the end of the week. And a lot of rain this week.

Meanwhile back in Poland they are having a picture perfect winter with a lot of snow and temperatures just below 0 that keep it from melting but don't feel too cold. That was what I really wanted.

EDIT: It's still so warm in my apartment I had to open windows and the balcony door to cool it down and I will leave to open for the night.
ellestra: (lightning)
As you, probably, noticed the world didn't end (again), the Holidays are over and the New Year is almost here. I'm still kind of drowsy after all the food and all the family meetings but also from the cold I managed to catch. It's not bad but it's my first since I went to US and got sick right after I got there. So I went home and caught something just like half of the country it seems. I wonder if it's higher population density or the weather but I never managed to avoid winter sickness in Poland even when I'm inoculated against the flu like now. Or maybe I'm more resistant to illnesses from people who are not as closely related to me and therefore have different immune systems. But most likely it's because I don't meet children in US - those incubators of the worst plagues (I know I was one of them).

Anyway, I was fine for the first week when it first snowed and then got really cold. It was -10 or below during the day and the world was covered in snow or finely powdered ice:

Then the weather changed just before Christmas laughing at our faces for thinking it was going to be the white one. temperatures rose above 0 on Christmas Eve and the rain dealt got rid of the rest of the snow. It was +7 on Christmas and all that was left was some remnants of ice because the ground was frozen. Now the world is made of mud. In other words typical Polish winter.

Luckily I went to see the Christmas decorations on Warsaw's Royal Route when the snow was still there and it looked pretty - Nowy Świat i Krakowskie Przedmieście:

I like those glass bolls hanging from lamp posts best:

Saturday was sunny and warm. Actually for this time of year it was hot - over 20oC in the sun with just slight cold wind - no more than short sleeve required. It was hard not to enjoy this and all the bikers, joggers and dog walkers certainly did. Signs of spring were everywhere and it was hard to believe in the forecast. And the forecast said that the rain will come and the temperatures on Sunday will never raise from what they'd dropped to during night.

It all came true. It was barely above zero during the day with cold rain. And then even harder to believe thing happened. It got even colder during the night and rain turned into snow. It snowed for the first time this winter. In mid-February.

It was kind of shocking (even with all the forecasts agreeing it would happen). This winter has been so warm that anything below 10oC seems cold even to me. And then we go from +20 to snow in little over 24 hours.

It's all gone now. The cold weather gone almost as quickly as it came (today was sunny and over 10 10oC and it's going to get warmer everyday till it's back to above 20 by the end of the week). All I have left is photos.

More under the cut )
ellestra: (sunrise)
I told you how warm winter has been here. Now I'm going to show you the effects.

Magnolias has been blooming for a month now and they don't look like they are going to stop anytime soon. Some kind of early blooming fruit trees - that bloomed at least a month later last year. Forsythias and daffodils. All the early spring flowers. Already here.

Today was cold (for this winter here) - only 13C but tomorrow it's supposed to be 17 again.

Of course it can still change. After all it's still February and one never knows. It was super warm winter in Europe too until it suddenly got super cold. My family complains about the cold but it's not all that unusual for Poland. Just sudden. What really makes an impression is seeing palms under snow. Split under snow is so weird - much weirder then here despite being further north. What is so surprising is not the snow and cold. Last to winters had enough of that. It's the sudden change in weather. Poland had temperatures mostly above freezing for most of winter and then it suddenly got to -15 to -20 during day. It's also how far south and how long it lasts. Seeing Rome or even Algiers under snow makes this weather as weird as mine.

This is the climate change - extremes become more extreme.

Bonus - today's sunset:
ellestra: (lightning)
The weather is winter again.

I didn't take it seriously when they started all the snow warnings. I was right as snow was barley noticeable but then last night I started hearing strange sound. Like something throwing sand at the building. I came out and it was raining ice.

It wasn't hail. Hail is white and dry. It was like rain but with hard, tranculent ice nucleus inside each drop. By the morning it looked like world has been in the hands of crazy sugar confectioner - all sugar and icing. This is when it got really dangerous. When I went outside today I slipped, almost fell and whent back to change shoes.

When the snow warnings came they put salt on all sidewalks. The thing is it got stuck under the snow and ice and is not helping at all. But today was the first time I saw snow shovels being used to clean sidewalks so progress.

I wouldn't really mind too much if not for the fact that the flats here are not really made for cold. The heating system doesn't really heat the place up too well and windows and doors are draughty. The heating made the bill higher then it was during the summer. I used the fireplace for the first time today but it didn't give out a lot of heat. I never had a fireplace before so I don't know if it was made that way or if i did something wrong. My father says I need to keep fire on for longer so the whole thing warms up and starts to give out heat but it's kind of hard to do between being at work and sleeping.
ellestra: (lightning)
it snowed whole night and then a little bit more during the day. The wet snow sticking to everything. In the last possible moment it turned into white Christmas. Here in North Carolina of all places. This is coldest December on record or as I call it winter.

These photos are not black and white )

I went shopping with a friend because she is moving to a colder place and was looking for a winter coat. I was told about shopping craze after Christmas and expected crowds but the snow scared a lot of people so there was less people in the mall then on average Sunday. The funny thing was the roads were clear, black and often dry. It's television warnings to stay at home spreading panic made the whole shopping experience much easier for all of us.
ellestra: (lightning)
It's snowing outside. Exactly as the forecast predicted it first started to rain in the evening but now everything is white. And I just finished watching Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol.

I loved it. Spoilers ) Although knowing what been happening in the Europe and particularly in UK this winter I didn't think people there were as happy to see snow as characters were. Especially those stranded in airports.

Here the snow just covers the trees, roofs and cars. it's still to warm and it melts on the asphalt but I know that if it keeps snowing all night tomorrow there are going to be problems with transport here too. At least it's prettier then the freezing rain that Poland has right now. It rained the whole Christmas Eve and was warm and everything was melting. Today it started to get colder and now the rain is freezing over the leftover snow (there was too much of it too melt from just one day of rain but the fog was as dense as fake one my father says). When I read or here what is happening there I'm kind of glad this winter I spend away. It also makes the problems this little snow will cause seem even more funny. Even if it is a coldest December on record here.
ellestra: (lightning)
It's winter on Northern hemisphere and it makes sure we all notice. The snow is falling like crazy both in North America and Europe. Blizzard raged in the US Midwest. You can see the worst snowstorm in two decades on Neil Gaimans blog. This is the kind of winter that I only heard of in stories as a kid. The second half of '80 in Poland was pretty snowless. At least dogs in snow are cute and cats obviously are smarter then everyone else.

Back home they just got another layer to already giant pile of snow. It started once again from the west. First causing traffic problems UK, France and Germany and then ending the heat wave in Middle East in giant storm. Israel went from 30 oC and drought to snow in the mountains and heavy rain everywhere else. No power, no cell phone reception but at least fires are out. In Poland snow just stopped and now it's getting cold. The minus temperatures already reached double digits. More pipes are going to burst.

In all of this I'm lucky to just have cold wind that chills below freezing temperatures another 6 oC (it means that -9 we had at night feels like -15 and it's cold even to me). The puddles and ponds are frozen (but it's not thick enough to walk on) but it's not cold enough to freeze running water but makes wonderful ice sculptures at the pool (no they didn't let the water out - probably didn't expected this could be necessary). But it's pretty:

More Ice )

It's nice to look at now when I sit in my moderately warm flat (not made for this kind of weather) but I got cold taking those despite my serious winter clothes. And that even though it was a little bit warmer today. Tomorrow snow, snow with rain and then rain. In this order. Now I really feel Christmas is coming.

And in case you were wondering, no, it doesn't mean global warming has been canceled.

It's still cold. Today it was above 0 oC for a more then a moment but as it feels about 3 to 4 oC colder then it really is it still felt below freezing. It's been like that since Sunday so snow is still lying on the grass and roofs. I think it was colder here in past few days then in Warsaw. But it's snowing in Poland and with temperatures around 0 bad things happen - from car crashes to rivers threatening to overflow once again. If it's that bad there I'd rather not think what that kind of weather would do here. So I'll stick to Canadian cold winds. I just wish there was a custom of cleaning the ice from walkways here. I think they just not expected it to last so they don't have anything to clean it with. Until someone slips and brakes something.

I just noticed that I haven't posted finished version of the Sleeping Lion
