Today is St. Nicholas Day. Where I'm from today is nameday for Nicholas. The names connected with a particular day are of that day patron saints. Today's most important patron saint is Saint Nicholas (here better known as Santa Claus) and it is a day when he brings small gifts, mostly sweets. As a kid you find them in your slippers when you wake up. During my phd there was a friend who left a small choclate Santa on everyone's bench. A sort of rehearsal for Christmas. True start of the holiday season.
