The fall shows are slowly staring and today there was the first showing for a new SF&F one and I try to try all of those. So I watched the pilot of the Sleepy Hollow. It was ridiculous and overdone (like they tried to put everything they could think of in it) but also full of action and kind of fun (and nice setup for future mysteries). A lot of things were a little over the top. From found footage like horror creatures to pretty witches. Combining British accent and Revolutionary War hero credit in one person was like trying to appeal to all possible tastes (especially since the accent was both historically inaccurate and sounded exaggerated). Partnering black woman with a guy from 250 years ago so hilarity ensues.

It became pretty popular among TV shows to kill recognisable actors in pilots (or soon after) and there were two deaths like that here. I also couldn't not compare Clancy Brown character with the one Jeff Fahey played on Under the Dome for many other reasons - like all his secrets (complete with them being discovered by his deputy).

As you can tell there isn't much one can say about the characters in the pilot (my favourite character right now is Pinky - the red-eyed, white horse - points if you get the reference). The first episode had a lot of chasing shooting and head cutting and a rider without head exchanging axe for guns going for it. It also established some basis for interesting mythology with good and bad covens and Apocalypse (although saying outright you are aiming for 7 season might be little premature). However, I don't know if they can keep up the action and it might devolve into repeatable monster of the week thing that always makes me loose interest. But so far I liked Nicole Beharie character and her boss played by Orlando Jones can be a good foil for the main characters so I'll give it a couple more episodes (or even more just to offset all the "black chick ruins the show" comments).

I also watched the season finale of Under the Dome. I actually like the show more now then when it started and the mysteries got more interesting.

It's not perfect. I still despise Junior (and feel bad he got away with what he did to Angie and so he can keep being creepy) but part of me also pities him (even bigger part wishes for proper psychiatric help) and most of my hate is now reserved for his father. I'm also still mad at the show for killing Dodee (and generally Big Jim going on women killing spree and making them helpless first - two of them where actually bound). I also had issues with the death on Norrie's mom and ever bigger one with forgetting her other mom for few episodes. I also really I'm sad to what happened to the character of Linda. She got shafted to give other characters more spotlight and heroics and she always two steps behind the truth and makes the wrong decisions and she started awesome.

However, I'm happy I was right about Julia being the Monarch (she wasn't shocked when she touched the mini dome but saw a spectre like the Four). I love both her and Angie - both are my favourite characters on the show - and I love how they deal with the danger under pressure. I like Angie brother and Barbie and even the DJ (even though I would gladly exchange him for Dodee). I also like watching Big Jim manipulativeness even though I deeply dislike his character. But most of all I like the story - the egg storyline and the Four and the Monarch and the pink stars rising in lines makes me want the next episode right now.

I'm glad it's no longer a miniseries and I hope we don't have to wait till the next summer.
