Drama:
Last Resort - I didn't expect to like it - it seemed to be too overboard - but I did. The idea seemed stupid and I only watched it for the cast and because I try to try all that even a little sf but I had fun. There was suspense and action and interesting characters who really nicely interacted with each other - equator crossing, reactions to the order - you feel like the characters know and care about each other. I even liked the nebulous conspiracy. I usually am very wary of this things but I liked how we got all the red herrings for various people to belong to that and then they didn't and might be good guys. I loved the Australians. I liked how they clearly left now for sf - they exploded nukes in Pakistan! And then in US! And of course all the questions - Why? Who? What did the marines do? I hope they'll keep it fun.

Revolution - I wanted to like it (SF!, post-apocalypse!) but it was just so full of so stupid things I almost don't want to see any more. It's like they took the worse parts of Abram's and Kripke's works and put them together. The premise with big event that doesn't have any sensible explanation (changing laws of physics? seriously?) with results that don't even align with the voice-over (pastoral villages! clean, new clothes straight from the machines 15 years after all of them stopped working!). It reminded me of the shared universe from the series of Polish sf novels where there are nanomachines that attached to and disrupt all that's electrical. But I doubt this is going to make that much sense. Also in the novels everyone goes back to steam - lost opportunity for Revolution - they could've gone steampunk.

The most annoying part came from obsession with family (the Google guy is the only non-family member in the group) and spectacularly stupid behaviours that make everything worse (both kids acted like they were at least 10 years younger then they really were - there was pouting and pointing gun at the whole army). Add to that missing parent and rescuing younger (sick) brother from evil that wants him and you can tell who has issues. He even made that brother responsible for the death of a family member in the first episode. I wanted to slap them, or ground for life. So frustrating. The only interesting parts - uncle and his connection to the militia ruler and the device that can make electricity work again. And the poison scene.

Comedies I liked:
Go On - I liked the patients and even Perry's character,
The New Normal - It's kind of cute but grandma is horribly stereotypical in her stereotyping (but the gun thing was funny)
The Mindy Project - It was cute too although full of douchey people but funny too. It's nice to have self-deprecating female lead.

Meh:
Guys with Kids - I'm pretty sure I saw it but I don't remember what happened.

Bad:
Animal Practice - Just not funny

There are some beautiful photos of shuttle Atlantis last launch but this is best of them all. It's so pretty it looks almost like CGI.

Remember that weird spike in Tevatron data? The one some called a new particle where there should've been none. Here's a new explanation for it and this one tries to explain matter/antimatter asymmetry the observable neighbourhood.

This is can be bad news for me. It looks like particles can move up the water stream (at least short one) when the liquid cohesion and backflow are stronger then gravity. This means that whatever is in the tube can contaminate the pipette tip. And it's so much faster to pipette ethanol to all tubes with just one tip.  A lot of people do it because one does not touch the tip to anything so it should be clean for another use but this means it may not be. I wonder how much fluid you need to pour in to get the contamination.

We all know what it's supposed to do and most have heard about the most common side effects but it looks like Viagra can also alleviate the multiple sclerosis symptoms or cause deafness. One is untested in humans (although with how common it is there are bound to be people with MS who've taken it) other happens extremely rarely and almost exclusively to older men. Hope you're not among the unlucky ones.

I felt it my whole life but here's a proof - smoke not only triggers asthma it leads to developing it. All kinds of smoke - from second-hand to industrial. Thank you Warsaw and all Polish smokers.

And, as some of you may know, tomorrow is Rapture. I'm off of blogging for the weekend so I'll see who of you was deemed worthy on Monday (I'm staying - atheists go to science meetings not heaven). Till then you have till 6 p.m. local time to think about this:

A lot of series had ended recently either for a season or permanently.

I liked how the Stargate: Universe ended. This was a good series ending and the cliffhanger was minor. I'm a little sad as they really got to be the one true space science fiction on TV and they were pretty good at it. I didn't really watched the first season but from everyone complains I gather that was the reason show was not popular and even though almost everyone agreed it got much better it never truly found audience. Well, maybe Blood and Chrome will have better luck.

I loved the season finale of Community from Star Wars references to the group bonding. Spoilers )

So yes I watched Community and cought only a last part of The Vampire Diaries but after last week I just didn't care. Spoilers )

I however loved Nikita's season (hopefully) finale. It was full of twists and of characters being awesome. Spoilers )

Tomorrow is the season finale of Chuck and the last episode ever of Breaking In (although some rumors say it may come back from the dead) has been moved to Tuesday.

I'm falling in love with Breaking In. It's latest proof of that nerd culture is becoming more and more mainstream. In a way it's even less probable and more comedic Leverage. Still it's fun. Minor spoilers )

The latest episode of Community was so awesome. Minor spoilers )

And then on today's Raising Hope they not only had Ethan Suplee and Jamie Pressly together but also managed to complement him on loosing weight since Mallrats.I was sad they didn't get them and Gregg Binkley together but at least Jason Lee got to call him Kenny earlier. With Gregg Binkley guest staring few weeks back the only one of My Name is Earl cast left is Nadine Velazquez.

Now for something bad - the last episode of Chase made me instantly stop being sad about it and not care about any more episodes left. I used to love you. I would say the same about Vampire Diaries but I never really loved it.

I have nothing to say really but not posting today would sestroy my postting pattern. On that calendar that's ther in my journal style. I don't know whether it's my artistic side or sign of hidden OCD (or both) but I feel the need to try. Last month turned out pretty well and I'm hoping this one will too. So I'm just going to spam you today.

BTW Is it sad that I know Lady Gaga's songs only from parodies?

Santa Claus published the Carolome: Functional Imprints of Culture Memes in the Global Genome - finding codes for popular English language carols in proteins (protein single letter code).

To celebrate this milestone discovery* here are some Christmas songs:

*The article linked above is a joke. I say it because unfortunately this kind of stuff is often used by wackos as a proof of existence of God/Intelligent Designer or something like that. It is not. In this line of thought the name of God is AGATA (that's how we write it in Polish) as it is spelled constantly in genetic code. Here I proved God is a woman. And the thing with Mary means she's a lesbian :P

Have a Merry Christmas or at least Happy Holidays :)

The life on the edges of history is though as this intreview with a certain innkeeper shows. All the fame and glory goes to someone else and you end up cleaning manger after the child. Nothing but troubles and the importance of things can only be seen in hindsight.

Scalzi also sums up the year in film sf - the interesting, the successful and the nerd vindication.  This was not a very exciting year. Maybe just doesn't look that good in comparison with 2009 but I didn't really care about any of those except Inception. And maybe Tron:Legacy but I haven't seen it yet.

A propos Tron sequel, what would you say about Starman 2? Jeff Bridges is interested. And it's not because he doesn't get work.

And today is first day of winter and the days will start getting longer from now. It's not as important here as it's back in Poland as here days are so much longer I keep thinking it's March but it's still a nice though.

EDIT: And here is another interview. This time with Christmas Bunny. Yes, Christmas. It's a franchise.

I have another party to attend today (there was one yesterday) so I only came to share a moment from the last Community episode. It has talk about Farscape and gay sex:

I found it because when I watched it first I was too excited about Farscape being mentioned to get what was actually said in that scene. I understand Abed sometimes it's so hard to find someone to talk to about things you care about. Especially if it means sharing Farscape love.

I think that's why I like Abed more then guys from The Big Bang Theory. Tey only talk about stuff non-geeky people think is geeky and lack references to things not widly known about. You know like real geeky person does. The less known TV series, the wildly discussed books and non-mainstream comics. And of course all the web series. I understand they are afraid too many people won't get it and they won't get a laugh but I wish they'd at least tried. This shows it can be done. And there are people who will love you forever for this.

I was annoyed from the beginning that District 9 got nominated in the international film category. Maybe it was for the better as it seems like the only ones that got the award for things other then Avatar related were in categories that avatar was not nominated for. I still think District 9 was the best sf film of last year. In fact one of the best films of last year. And Sam Rockwell was better then Sam Worthington.

Luckily I've just found something to console myself -  District 11: World Cup District 9 spoof

This was a very stressful week and I just didn't have the strength to write or frankly even idea what to write about. Just little something instead:

This has been everywhere lately but I was concentrating on other thing so I only heard it. It's hard to believe but there so are most creationists and they are real too.

The amount of pure, unadulterated ignorance presented in this cannot be beaten easily. Not even by SNL spoof. It's hard to more ignorant.

I could try to be more sarcastic but other people already did it better. You know you're bad when even MTV feels need to correct you.

Stephen Fry got million followers on twitter so he gave the world this:

It all sounds pretty sensible to me. I think I will give Windows 8 a miss.

If you ever wondered how the God really worked the whole creating Universe things, making rules and evil then Mr. Deity shares snippets of his life with you. With the help of Larry, Jesse and Lucy. Because Mr. Deity might be all knowing and all powerful but somebody has to do the real work (Larry), become human and die (Jesse) and take care of the unwanted element (Lucy). And if you didn't know Lucifer is a woman. Who else would take the job of running Hell? It requires the level of competence Mr. Deity certainly lacks.

All the episodes are available on Mr. Deity site. And if you still have any questions left you can ask Mr. Deity anything through his prophet PZ Myers.
