The popularity of the new Star Wars is still soaring. And it's very popular - it just became the highest grossing film in US ever and third in the world already and despite everyone saying China doesn't care for Star Wars it's also did extremely well on it's first day there (I knew it - what does it matter they didn't watch the originals in cinemas - they stay on point on popular culture as well as everyone else and love big spectacle as much as everyone else - maybe even more). This kind of popularity means inevitable fan art and parodies.

There are the beautiful mash-ups of Star Wars with Calvin and Hobbes by Disney artist Brian Kesinger. The most popular one is the most classical:

By my favourite one is this - so true

After all we all know Kylo Ren is the emo one (I wondered if he dies his hair from the start - noone in the family had hair this dark). He shows us all how misunderstood he truly is through his twitter account. Misunderstood by his parents and picked on by his very lonely uncle Luke.

It's a hard life. The one that's may lead one to drank Force calling that girl Rey and keep offering to teach her the Dark Side. Because "No" is never an answer and and she will eventually want him if only Hux stops putting his tantrums on Youtube. It's all described in Kylo Ren needs to Chill.

Despite pouring rain I managed to get to the cinema and see Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Everyone have already analysed every second of it so here are just the observations that stood out to me the most.

It was funny. Much funnier than I expected and it was mostly based on great interactions between characters. The chemistry between main characters is instant and great and you don't mind that they became BFFs (or fall in love) basically at first look (only Han is a little grumpy but that just adds to his charm). There is a lot of shout outs to the original movies both inside the story and just for the viewers. And the story is pretty classical peasant boy finds out his destiny is to save the world but she's actually a girl so she even gets to save herself and that was great. She does rescue her love interest just like it always happens in these stories. But even the tropes in the story were mostly done in a fun and enjoyable way and the interplay of the old and new elements and beautiful visuals to make this great film to watch.

There were few moments they were a little too obvious. I went in completely unspoiled but I still knew exactly what the fate of Han Solo will be the moment Leia mentioned trying to talk their son out of being on Dark Side (like he went and joined Scientology or something). So when went on that bridge I knew the only way he'll comes out of it was down. But the "dying of the light" behind him and the lightsaber through the heart were so over the top symbolic I just spent that whole thing rolling my eyes. Still, it was sad to let Han go - he was always my favourite (like most people) and incredibly fun in this film (not to mention the crazy stunts with hyperspace jumping). But I was also expecting they are going to kill all the old cast so the new generation can take over (and just like old film did with Obi-wan and Yoda) so I'm also glad we still have Leia and Luke.

The First Order flags and looks (and the Empire before that) had distinctly Nazi looks but I thought they went a little overboard with Domhnall Gleeson's character basically going full Hitler on that speech. This was not a comedic scene but it made me giggle because they managed to combine to ultimate movie evils - posh British accent and Hitler (and he's ginger). And that guy doesn't even use Force. But I loved him because he was such a wonderful prick to Kylo Ren about everything (tattling on him to Supreme Leader and enjoying his every misstep). I can imagine these two in an office type comedy (only with more dead planets).

The last scene was also a little ridiculous. I know it was supposed to be moving but they just stare at each other silently for so long it started being funny (it also felt like the whole thing was in the film only to have Luke in the film). Also he was gone for years but he knew where he was going (left a map) and it was close enough that Ray just flew there to get him so it's not like searching for that place took him years. It looked like he failed at Jedi school so he left home and abandoned everyone to brood in Ireland and stare at sea (and Han went to have fun adventures in shipping). While Leia did all the actual hard work of fighting the bad guys and maintaining alliances. Way to go guys - abandon the work for fun and side projects while woman takes care of everything.

The current most popular theory is that Rey is Luke's daughter. I can see that too. Someone did abandon her on Jakku and never came back and Luke did that basically to everyone so why not her too. And as everyone points out she is a tech genius on a desert world with strong connection to the Force. Just like Anakin and Luke. But thorough the film I also wondered if she might be Leia and Han's. Rey and Han were shown to be so similar - literally thinking the same thing and understanding each other without words and then she basically takes inherits his ship. Also the way they often show Ray and Kylo Ren mirroring each other - identical but opposite. She is the daughter Han didn’t know but who wants to be just like him and Ben is the son who knew him and rejects him. It’s very mythological. I’m fine with her being Luke’s daughter but the foreshadowing here that he was Han’s and Ben’s sister was pretty heavy. (I’m not the only one who thinks so.) But no matter whose daughter she is it seems implied pretty hard she is a Skywalker (that suspicious cut when Leia asks Han who the girl is made me wonder if they know) and that makes the whole epic story about battle between Light and Dark Side of the Force a family affair. Again.

I know these may seem like I didn't like it but I did. It is great entertainment and Rey was awesome, Finn was precious, Poe was likeable (limited screen time he had) and the old guard characters were great to see again. I saw a lot of complains about Kylo Ren - that he isn't as competent nor as scary as Vader but I thought he perfectly captured brooding and anger issues of young Anakin (both also slayers of children) so he seemed a lot like his grandfather actually. And I would like to see more Maz Kanata. She was great. I also don't care about the scenes that were in trailers that weren't in the film (partly because I stopped watching trailers few weeks ago - there were so many of them) but I'm sorry that the changes in story for final cut meant all Maisie Richardson-Sellers had left is one staring scene before being blown up.

So the sunshine is still not here. The best we got was few days of just clouds instead of clouds and non-stop rain. And it switched from hot and raining to cold and raining. Three days ago I had to switch the AC back on because it was getting 25C inside my apartment (same as outside) and with the humidity it was just too sticky. It at least got the humidity down (92% outside but only 72% inside). Then Sunday came with cold wind and no rain for a moment so I enjoy a moment of getting a little drier. And then I woke up today to the sound of falling rain. It was barely above 10C and rained the whole day. Of course as a Polish person (and generally European from North side of Alps) this is what I consider true November weather. This is why it is the worst month - rain, mud, cold and very short days made even shorter by the clouds and rain. The trees are bare, the skies are grey and the days are getting shorter. November in Europe is what depression looks like.

Here usually is not that bad. US is generally much much sunnier - way more sunny days in a year (except Pacific Northwest which has similar weather to Western Europe). I started to get used to autumn and November being sunny and pretty warm. This is usually when the best fall colours happen around here - the yellow, red and orange against blue skies looks amazing. But this year all the rain has already taken all the leaves out. They were still getting not fully changed last weekend and this one they were all gone. I blame the El Niño - I'm told it makes this part of the continent very rainy when it happens.

So this is the best autumn pic I got - a week ago (if you look closely you can see the rain)

So here is something to take the mind off the weather - new Star Wars trailers with new footage

ellestra: (sunrise)
This is the week when they tease us with the incoming attractions but we al know that not all that looks good in trailers fulfils the hype. We are grown ups well acquainted with disappointment. We can manage our expectations. We can... Oh, fuck it. So let's just allow ourselves enjoy it.

Jessica Jones full trailer is finally here and it's awesome (we don't even see much of him and I'm already revolted by the Purple Man)

And here's another thing that will premiere on 20 November - Amazon's The Man in High Castle. I loved the pilot (you can see the first 2 episodes here for free) and this makes it look even better than I hoped. I want it to succeed so badly it hurts.

All the Star Wars trailers put together in one - looks pretty epic, doesn't it?

The Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer is out

It's May the Fourth so of course a lot of Star Wars so we finally got to meet the bad guys. The photos of Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong’o and Adam Driver's characters have been released. Or at least Driver's character without mask for the first time. Lupita's character seems to be all CGI as she is just there in the motion capture gear (but she owns a cool castle). And anyone can be inside that, admittedly very cool, Gwendoline's character armour. The best part of this is the Vanity Fair cover. Almost make me want to get the magazine...

For an actual film with the space battles you can watch now here's SMBC Theater's Starpocalypse (with space pope learning all about the things science explained)

There's also picture the cast of Suicide Squad in costume. I still don't care. So have Bruce Timm's reaction instead.

In last two days teaser trailers for both Star Wars and Batman v. Superman dropped and now everyone is in a fritz analyzing what is and isn't there. All I can say is that the Star Wars one actually made me want to see the film (Luke passing the mantle to his niece(?) and Han and Chewie) and BvS just made me laugh (Batman's mask has built-in frown - almost as bad as nipples)

Showing of the Star Wars trailer was part of the Star Wars Celebration and the best part of that was learning that the new, jabulani-like robot is real. So now everyone is wondering how the head is attached.

So the rumour has it Tatiana Maslany has been cast in a lead role in the next Star Wars standalone spin-off movie. It still hasn't been officially announced but all the signs and unofficial sources confirm it's true. I wish her all the success she deserves but I hope she'll keep doing Orphan Black. Being Human never really recovered from Mitchell's death. For now we have all the Clone Wars jokes you can think off.

The American remake of Broadchurch just died but that doesn't discourages them from trying again and again. Newest victim - Black Mirror. I have no idea how they plan to turn that into an American format TV series. Also Luther is getting Americanised. I don't really see it working as 20-something episode series but maybe the original creator do.

In Joss Whedon's Buzzfeed interview he elaborates on his words about his criticism on excuses for lack of female superheroes, not doing any more Avengers movies, maybe doing Captain Marvel and his own projects including a film about female Batman-like character. He's also sad that Fox has all the X-Men with all the coolest female characters and I agree. What is worst for me they really not doing much with them and there are so many good stories there. But we cannot know that Marvel/Disney would've really been better. Their female characters are still missing from merchandise.

I decided to try to make myself feel better and see something nice and uplifting. So I went to see Big Hero 6. It such a pretty film. And cute. It's also very predictable - at least most of the plot points are obvious to anyone with even rudimentary knowledge of superhero origin stories. But it makes up for it with the characters and emotions - it is a beautiful story about grief, anger, sacrifice and family and friendship. And about growing up and finding something to care about. It is moving and funny and very, very pretty. My only issue was that Hiro kept Baymax design for himself - everyone needs their own health care companion.

One important advice - one shouldn't choose a movie that's about loosing someone after losing someone (even a pet). I was very glad it was dark in that theatre few times. Also - one for the Feast short - that's no way to feed a dog. Don't do this to your pets.

Everyone else was watching the new Star Wars teaser trailer that just dropped today. I know most people have different priorities but for me the most interesting point was that apparently not all Storm Troopers are clones Or is John Boyega's character only pretending to be one?
ellestra: (river song)
The list of the characters coming in the next season of Games of Thrones has a lot of Dornish characters. I'm one of those people who really like Dorne (them and Dany's chapters are my favourite parts) so I'm pretty happy about this.

I just realised I never wrote about how the Suvudu's Cage Match ended this year. It was pretty surreal clash between Screen and Page version of Leia Organa. Surprisingly the Book version won. Too bad that she's no longer cannon.

Ever since I've heard about the movie based on Stanisław Lem's The Futurological Congress was being made I wondered what this movie has in common with the book. The first trailer of Congress doesn't help with this at all. It seems to have even less in common with Lem's book than I, Robot had with Isaac Asimov's work. However, the story in the movie seems like pretty decent SF. I'm not sure why are they dragging Lem into this.

CW announce they cancelled Star-Crossed, The Tomorrow People and Carrie Diaries and renewed The 100, Hart Of Dixie and Beauty And The Beast. From all of this I only doesn't understand why has Beauty and the Beast been renewed. I'm kind of sad about TTP - I will miss a lot of it's cast - but it was getting worse instead of better. I'm really happy for Hart Of Dixie. The 100 is my favourite of the new CW shows.

The article about making The Fault in Our Stars movie and John Green's rise to fame. Before you go there beware it contains spoilers for the book/movie when describing scenes being filmed.

Obviously the Skynet creation is fixed point in time and so is John Connor's birth so no wonder that Doctor is going to show up and not tell anyone (also another Brit in this movie it's almost like watching The Black Box and wondering why they even bother to make it America). But I'm all for Matt Smith getting awesome film career so I hope this will turn out to be fun.

You have probably heard about the epic William Shatner/Carrie Fisher fight about supremacy of Star Trek over Star Wars and vice versa. Despite the calls for peace the conflict still rages on. It's as camp as you imagine it to be.

I'm reinstalling the system. I was planning this for months but there was always something urgent I needed the computer for so I kept postponing it. I finally have time as it always take forever to update. So way I keep restarting you can have May the Fourth from ISS:

When saw Wreck-It Ralph they've first treated us to a short, black and white, hand drawn animation. Here it is now - available to everyone:

The new Muppets movie is to be called The Muppets…Again! and the first official photos are out.

How LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy convinced J.J Abrams to direct the next movie and her plans for the Star Wars and work with Spielberg from Raiders of the Lost Ark to Lincoln. I'm going to wait and see before I have any comment on the new Star Wars movies because on one hand there is the last time we got new Star Wars but on the other Disney has done really nice things with Marvel.

Speaking of Marvel - as we all know SHIELD is coming to TV and Clark Gregg would be reprising his role as Agent Phil Coulson and it's not a prequel but sequel to Avengers. Is he a robot? Was he resurrected? Never died? Oh and Cobie Smulders might show up in it too from time to time.

Suvudu readers voted on the cast of hypothetical Star Wars episodes 7-9. It includes recasting all the main cast from classic trilogy. With the top vote and writ in being announce you can see if they match your mental image. I think it's so predictable I can almost see it done with those people.

NPR announced their Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books but how one decides which one of those to read? Luckily SF Signal put together a handy chart that will allow you to find the book for you. I just keep finding the ones I already read but then there are only a few I didn't.

And if you didn't watch last week's Community or you missed the important 26 seconds then you may not get the newest meme. It's been less then a week but the best show Abed has ever seen already has a full cannon history. Inspector Spacetime tvtropes page lists all the episodes, Inspectors and associates. Tumblr is full of confessions of the fans and you can have your own t-shirt to show your allegiance or a poster. After all, everyone knows is much better then the rip-off.  How could Artur Darvill defect to it?

Coping

After two days it's finally stopped raining. The weather actually reminds me of home firstly because that's what Polish autumn often looks like, secondly because that's how it was in Poland for almost all my stay last time I was there few weeks ago. But at home I was too busy with family and friends to care about the weather (although I was hoping for some cool pictures of sunrises and webs as they are usually prettiest in August but no luck this time). Here it just makes me miss the ceiling lights again. And the sidewalks are even more uneven then back home and drain system can't cope with the water. This means streets sometimes turn into streams. Of course this means closed schools and warnings everywhere. As with snow I find all this very funny. Such rains often happen in Poland but it's barely enough excuse to be late. I suppose the fear of lawsuit turns government into a nanny state better then socialism.

In other mishaps I got new CS5 Web Premium from the IT office but when I tried to install it the serial number was wrong. So I went there and after double checking everything and treating me like an idiot who can't install a program it turned out they gave me the code for Design Premium. Someone must've been meteoropathic

Not only people are affected. Today it took me twice longer to get home as the bus malfunctioned. Do you know what happens when a hybrid bus runs out of electricity? It's a little bit like normal one running out of gas plus funny door problem. At least it was funny to other people not on our bus. The doors didn't want to stay closed. It was a little bit like my cheap samsung camera when the batteries were low. it made the optics move out even when I tried to turn it off. Made trying to hide it kind of awkward. This time the door just wouldn't stay closed. We finally switched to another bus but then the old one blocked the road. Oh, and I learned the buses are leaky.

And since the misery needs to be shared here is your share. George Lucas is set on rereleasing the "Star Wars" franchise in new 3D conversions beginning in 2012. Suddenly the end of the world stopped feel as such a bad idea. Somewhere my best friend is hugging her VHS cassettes with the original version of original trilogy. And I'm reminded of a book I just read. The recording my not match your memory. The official version may not be the original one. On the other hand this might be just another signal of our culture going back to the times of storytelling. After going through the state of one unchangeable version in the age of print that made anything committed to page a true version of the story, we go back to the kind of storytelling like the myths with many versions from which you chose your favourite one. After all if something was on the web once one can never be sure it's really gone, no matter how many official versions come later. However I'm sure that in this case it's just Lucas wanting some more money. He will probably adjust it to every new technology that'll come out and gets popular enough. As long as it will be possible or until he dies whatever comes first.
