I’m still in a bit of shock after the ending of Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles. So some of the thoughts now - more to come.

The Weaver-1001 not being on Skynet side was predictable but the ending was shocking.

John went to the future and found (was found by) those he lost. His family alive.

His father whom he never had a chance to meet.

His uncle who just died on him.

And Allison Young – the real girl behind Cameron.

This was probably the most heartbreaking. Because he never knew Allison from Palmdale, probably never considered her more then Cameron’s glitch and here she is real and alive. And he make that journey to follow Cameron, the robot girl who became so important to him he left his mother and his time to find her. They were dropping the sings of his crush for a while now. But there’s also certain unrequitedness in this. Because John Connor is the most important person in Cameron’s word but he is not love interest. She is a robot. There is that distinction between cylons and terminators – cylons were basically enhanced humans, terminators are robots covered in human skin. Terminators have hardware and programming that allows them to feign interest in humans, pretend romantic relation and sex when necessary but they don’t have glands and brain tissue that make people feel the sexual attraction and fell in love. They never evolved to mate. Even if John in a way fell in love with Cameron’s personality he is attracted to the fake shell she was wearing. And no matter how much she cares about him she can never reciprocate his feelings. For that she’d have to be an animal. That’s why I never wanted John/Cameron – too much of self-deception. Not to mention that she now looks like Garret Dillahunt :P

Now, Allison is just the opposite. She is the real girl, she is alive and human but she is also a different person. No matter how much of Cameron’s personality was based on Allison she was not Allison. And Allison isn’t her. Not the super girl who saved him so many times, not almost indestructible cyborg with autism. Not the one he came for. So was this about looks?

There are several ways to interpret the ending. This could be the future without John Connor. This is how it always was. Or this could be a new branch of future.

Maybe they finally removed John Connor from timeline and it turned out he wasn’t so indispensable – that the resistance still came to be and humanity fought back the Skynet attack. Maybe in this future it is led by Sarah or Savannah. I would love Savannah – leader of the Resistance, schooled by the awesome Sarah Connor to fight the machines but still remembering her friend John Henry. Although she would be taken by her family back to Scotland, wouldn’t she? Unless that was the beginning of the Judgement Day attack. Then she can stay with Sarah and Ellison. (BTW, was it just me or anyone else found it weird that she was called citizen of Scotland? I mean her nationality might be Scottish but she’d still be a citizen of UK, right?)

Maybe it was always this way and John Connor the saviour came to his people from nowhere to lead them in fight against machines. He becomes leader because he has a knowledge they lack – about things Skynet plans and does. And because he has some superfriends – John Henry and Weaver-1001. It would explain John Connor’s ability to reprogram terminators and his tendency to depend on them – they are the reason he came in the first place and they helped him from the start. It would also require him to send Kyle, Derek and Allison to their deaths so the history could repeat itself. Kyle and Derek sent past to make and protect him. Allison sent to death to give him Cameron, who he then sends away too. The full time loop. I don’t think I’d like such John Connor – in a way he kills them all for his own gain.

Maybe it’s another version of the future again. Like Jesse and Derek come from different futures. The Derek John knew was never tortured, the Jesse Derek knew knew Andy Goode. In the future Derek came from he celebrated John’s 30th birthday. In the knew one John is just a kid. This is the future in which he can make new choices. He can enjoy learning to know people who he thought was forever lost to him. I think he can still become a leader, despite not being the one leading the uprising on the Skynet camp and creating the Resistance. After all he has secret friends running around. He can seem like superhero with the help of T-1001 and a Skynet level AI. They could probably reprogram any number of T-888 or maybe John Henry could usurp Skynet. I wonder what John Henry’s motives were to come to the future anyway. Was that part of the plan from the beginning? Was Cameron part of it?

If it ends here everyone can pick their version. But I think I’d prefer some answers instead. And next season. I never expected this show to become this good.
