2009 is over so it's time to sum it up. These are my favourites of past year:

Books:
Steven Erikson's Dust of Dreams
Despite it ending with a cliffhanger it was the book that impressed me most last year. There was that perfect mix of humour, tragedy and awesomeness that only happens in Malazan books. I wrote about some of it and I need to write about the rest but I don't have the time now. This was the book that moved me most last year.

Films:
District 9
Same as with the last one. This was the movie that moved me most.

TV:
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
The series that touched my favourite themes. What it means to be alive and when one can be declared sentient and how we treat those different to us and the consequences of all of that. And it did it better than almost any visual medium before. Certainly better then BSG with its messy and pointless ending.

Honorable mention:
Dollhouse
It finally started delivering on its promise now that it's practically over. The show that should've been and that we had a glimpse of last season in episode 6. This just strengthens my belief that it should've been miniseries from the start.

All these have a lot in common. One could guess my preferences from these pretty easily. Good the adbots are not that good. Yet :P

I went to the Warsaw International Book Fair in the Palace of Culture. It's an annual event where you can meet the authors and buy books at the reduced price. I got some books (all Polish :P the others will come in a mail order because my internet bookstore has a very good prices during the Fair) and got some autographs. I got one of my all time favourite children book in audio version. This is a very good thing - I got to know it as a radio drama. It is intended for my nephew but was the first thing my mother took :P. I also got my name written in Japanese (at least I hope it is my name :P).

I also learned how Fox chose which show to cancel Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles or Dollhouse. And I thought Skynet and people running Dollhouse were evil... :P

Yesterday was cold and rainy, today sunny, hot and humid. Linden are almost blooming. I keep having dreams I skipped trough time forward and somehow missed a month. So I keep checking - it is still May (right?). Maybe I simply read/watch/think too SF. :P

It is a very :P post :P

I came to love the AI aspects of the Terminator: the Sarah Connor Cronicles. To think the show where the premise, like in all of Terminator franchise, is 'evil robots kill humans' – would take such a nuanced stand on AI. I think they did better then the BSG, which I think did a cop out on the subject.

AIs in T:TSCC with spoilers  )

There are some rumors that the show is canceled but it's not official and despite the bad numbers it seems there's still is some hope left. The producers T:tSCC debunked their show's cancellation rumor and the same goes for Dollhouse as Joss Wheadon still has hope.

There's also very interesting interview with Brian Austin Green about Derek Reese's fate in last two episodes and other stuff.

I’m still in a bit of shock after the ending of Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles. So some of the thoughts now - more to come.

Spoilers for T:tSCC 2x22 Born to Run )

If it ends here everyone can pick their version. But I think I’d prefer some answers instead. And next season. I never expected this show to become this good.

I’m loving Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles more and more with each episode. I was highly doubtful about the premise of the series and wasn’t expecting to even like it. I’m so happy I stuck with it. I think I like what they do with human/machine conflict more then the BSG resolution.

I don’t know any spoilers. This is just a speculation.

Spoilers for T:tSSC up to 2x21 Adam Raised a Cain + speculation (and a really small for Life) )

I wasn’t quite sure if I’m going to keep on watching Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I kind of liked it but not that much and most my friends were bored, so no one to even talk about it. Still I watched the season premiere and I really liked it – the song sequence at the beginning. The callbacks to the T1 movie. Cameron the evil robot girl. She gave out that “I’m so much stronger then I look, because I’m really made of metal” feel all the time. Except the begging scene when she used that “she knows everything about us” to her advantage. And that was the most creepy part.

I think that my fascination with the AI and human/AI relations is what has kept me watching this show. I wonder if they can make Cameron ‘get’ humans. Not just understand or follow the rules but comprehend why and what is important. After all I can’t believe Andy Goode is the only one ever to built sentient computers and
L.A. is the only place (Why not Silicon Valley I ask?) for it to happen. I think their biggest mistake is to try to stop AI from happening. They should try to make a friendly one. Not avoid the technology but the war.

I knew Shirley Manson is a robot the moment I laid eyes on her in promo shots and her stroking Turk lovingly only made me sure. It’s not like it’s the first time she has played an android after all. I just didn’t expect T-1000. And I think mirror would’ve been better then urinal (and wall) to spread herself on – less silly.
I’m surprised no one mentioned the World is not Enough video in which Shirley Manson is replaced by a killer robot that looks just like her. Some of the shots from that video look just like the Summer Glau’s in construction posters. I just wish Shirley’s character’s clothes were also more like in the video. Although I suppose the silver shining suit was to be a clue.
