Just like in previous years Being Human comes with a webseries. This time it's Alex's Unfinished Business and the first two episodes are out

And a new Game of Thrones promo is here

Some of the local US TV stations had their Emergency Alert System hacked with Zombie Attack Warning

Because Being Human ends and it made vampires tolerable.

Lord Hal by ~elluranee on deviantART

Although the truth is I picked this because I needed something with shadow and light to experiment with black and white on coloured paper. And I'm still pretty bad with likenesses so you can only see resemblance to Damien Molony if you squint.

Community is back (for, most likely, last time) and it started with the even more meta episode then usual. The way they referenced moving on, people leaving and Pierce being replaced was fun but what I liked most was them being Muppet Babies inside inside Abed's head and Abed Inceptioning himself and, of course, Jeff's tango with the Dean. The only thing that made me wonder was that in reality Abed seems supportive of Britta/Troy but in Abed's first level of happy place Jeff and Britta kiss. Also I know Kevin is faking changmnesia to come back.

Being Human also just started new, fifth series and we just learned it is the last one. BBC3 officially announced they are cancelling it. Too bad - I like Tom, Hal and Alex and was hoping they get to have more then 6 episodes for their dynamics to evolve. Especially Alex as it is her first series as main character. But, as Toby Whitehouse, I'm glad it lasted this long. It was fun and, unlike other vampire/supernatural shows it didn't make me despise everyone in it.

Promo for the Being Human series 5 coming back next month - the second generation:

And for Defiance - where Aliens are Brits painted in different colours - coming April 15:

Oh - and Doctor Who is coming back for Easter. The first episode of the rest of series7 is to air on 30th of  March - at least in UK but since BBCA has been doing the same day thing for couple of years now I don't think they'd want to change it for something that's bringing them record ratings. Of course then they'll have to change the the schedule for their brand new, very own series - Orphan Black (which by the way seems interesting). But of course the choice between rookie show and uber-popular series shouldn't be too complicated, right? Anyway here's trailer for Orphan Black as a consolation price:

I missed Nikita last week because I went to the movies but I finally had time to catch up today and I loved it. I love how it has so many women as both protagonists and antagonists and how each of them has her own goals. I love how they are working together on some things and against each other on others. I also like they keep introducing new ones. It's so rare - especially for the action/sf shows - to be female driven. I attach better to female characters but most of the female driven shows are dramas (or worse teenage dramas). I love Revenge but I just care more for genre shows. This means Nikita is perfect for me (the only thing better would be if it was in space but one can't have everything). Of course it also has very low ratings and is basically gone already. It's just my curse to like unpopular things. I checked and - for example - my enjoyment of CW shows is inversely proportional to their ratings. I don't know if it's something wrong with me or with everyone else.

Another thing that filled me with joy was Fringe. Fringe Spoilers ) I want more so much but, of course, it's on hiatus again. And, of course, Fringe's ratings are abysmal too.

Series 4 of Being Human just started on BBC America. I kept myself from watching so far but once you start it's hard to stop so SPOILERS )

Last episode of Nikita was great but it was so long since the first part aired most of the tension was gone as I forgot why I have to worry about the characters. I wish they stopped with the breaks every two episodes - it really kills the momentum. I think I enjoyed most shows better when I watched the downloaded episodes in batches of 3 or 4.

Nikita - Clean Sweep Spoilers )

I also liked the Fringe episode a lot. It had both interesting case and my favourite element Fringe - Making Angels Spoilers )

I've been watching The Fades but I'm barely able to keep interest. Often there is talk about all the misogynistic subtext in shows but this one just uses it like a stick and hits you in the head. Repeatedly.

The Fades (and BSG) spoilers ) Right now I'm only sticking for Natalie Dormer but there is not enough of her and she doesn't do much.

----------------
Tomorrow the original Being Human comes back and it'll be back on BBC America as soon as The Fades are over (in 3 weeks!) and despite my reservations I can't wait. I like both its humour and its shows the darker, uglier side of human nature - often at the same time. How it often can make me both sympathize and despise characters - see their good and ugly sides at the same time. People often talk about flawed characters but I this shows truly have ones. Whether you can forgive them their flaws or not is different for everyone but I like watching them even when I can't.

It's probably a spoiler more for the hypothetical fifth season more then this coming one but it's also a big one so if you don't want to know don't click.

Tor.com has a list of Top 10 Geek Girl Sites. I know most of them but some I haven't visited for a while. I looked through all of them. Not all of them are for me.However I learned some interesting things in the process .

It looks like someone noticed the large, untapped SFF book repository that is Russian speaking market and started translating more then just Lukyanenko. Sergey and Marina Dyachenko' s The Scar is slated to be published early next year. I just don't understand why they start with the second volume of the series.

There are some news about the next season of Being Human (the original one).Spoiler for series 4 )
ellestra: (being human)
Being Human is back and after watching is for much of the day I know I can never like the US version as much. The place in my heart is already taken by Annie, Mitchell and George. And Nina. What I love mostly about this show is how it mixes drama and insight into the most twisted parts of human nature that makes me want to puke and comedy that makes me laugh out loud. One moment there are things that make me cringe and look away and I just want to scream at people for behaving like this. And I don't mean killing or the other monster-related business (although that can be grisly too) but more the everyday assholery that is way too common around us. Then there is drama and all little heartbreaking moments that make me care so much. But most importantly it's intermixed with moments completely ridiculous comedy that make me laugh hysterically. I know some consider it jarring, this change of tone, from dramatic to hilarious sometimes in just a split second but I love it. After all this is what I love about Malazan books so what did you expect?

The other thing I love about the show is how it's not black and white. I love how it shows that being a monster is not about what you are but what you do and that being human is not just about being actual human being it's also about behaving like one should. For some reason I forgot to post my thoughts on the end of second season. I remember thinking how much I loved it and watching it again reminded me about it again. It's the one that showed how easy it is to become monster for all the right reasons. The one were we saw humans being the evil bad guys so twisted by their need to make a world a better, monster-free place they missed a moment when they turned into monsters.

Spoilers for Being Human up to 3x01 )

As always kudos to BBCA for showing at least premiere in full version. Watching cut version of other episodes made me realise high tightly packed they are with action. I kept thinking about all the stuff that should've been there but was missing. But I found it funny how they censored all the swearing. Sometimes it didn't leave much.

Fringe today had spoilers ) Still despite the flaws it is best genre series on TV right now.

And then there is this awesome Two Olivias with Guns wallpaper.

Speaking of TV series I love Being Human series 3 starts tomorrow on BBC America 9 p.m. (uncut) and they marathon the two previous series from 6 a.m.

In further future TV here is teaser for new Steven Spielberg's Alien Invasion series Falling Skies. Hopefully it'll be less cheesy then V.

Tamoh Penikett is to star beside Jeri Ryan in a Mortal Kombat webseries. If people like it it may turn into a movie. If not for these two I wouldn't even care thatt it exist now I'm tempted to watch it.

And because I have fondness for both Felicia Day and female assassins - trailer for her new webseries.

ellestra: (being human)
I keep watching US version of Being Human in hope it reaches the moment when it diverges from original. After all they have more time there should be at least some new stories. Because so far I have hard time concentrating on what is happening when I already know the plot. The fact that it's all out of sequence has just made it worse. Especially the relationships between characters seem much less organic. I sometimes can't tell why they react the way they do because we never see what let them to it. We aren't even told. For example, I don't understand why Josh said to Sally he wants her to stay when all he ever did was to complain and be meant to her. Like the relations between characters are like they are because this is how they were in British version not because that comes from their actual interactions. And I liked Gilbert more. But I liked the policeman storyline so I'll keep watching for now.

I think it'd be better if they just use ides and the universe and created their own characters and stories not copies. How creator of the original did with the new webseries Becoming Human. I already like it better then the US remake. Or maybe I just like Toby's humour and writing better.

I'm watching old V on Syfyf to see some old school awesomeness of Diana before she makes a comeback on new one tomorrow. I forgot how much fun this actually was. The new version of resistance isn't even half as competent. Good I watch it for the bad guys :P

In the meantime Syfy shows ads for their version of Being Human at every comercial break. there have been some good reviews and I usually let the show be judged by themselves .but I've just seen trailer for the series 3 of the original and that's what I really want. It made me laugh (well the George and Nina part at least):

What worried me most about io9 review of first 3 episodes was their praise of Mitchell and George counterparts but dislike of Sally the ghost. Maybe it's because they'll get more episodes in US version and Annie story in BBC version was also more prominent in later part of the season. Maybe is because the show is run by people who used to be on Supernatural - show about two guy and no female characters - who just don't know how to write dynamics of three characters, especially when one of them is female. I don't know but I will hate this show it it turns to be just about the vampire and werewolf and their manpain.

In the BBC version Annie (and Nina) made it bearable.
Just watching Annie transmissions webseries made me feel the love again.

Syfy put the trailer of their version of Being Human on their site. It's funny how more special effects make it look so much more cheesy, The ghost thing is horrible. But the pouting and sunglasses look Sam Witwer does is even worse. Well at least the George guy still seems to run around naked.

But how can I complain when it just says syfy on the screen (and no it'll never stop being funny). Back at home it still says SciFi. It's easier. Then at least one cannot blame oneself for watching while constantly being warned it's not good. Or maybe it's just me. Like constant subliminal message. I just see the description along with the action and it instantly becomes worse.
ellestra: (Default)
Lets start with the cute. Captain Jack Sparrow visited a school in England. A nine year old girl wrote a letter asking him to lead mutiny against teachers and Johnny Depp along some other cast members dressed in full costume came and preformed for the kids.

The SFX is having pols for the ultimate Star Trek crew. You can chose from people from all the Star Trek incarnations from TOS through TNG, DS(, Voyager and Enterprise to latest reimaging. I'm partial to TNG and DS9.

I find the whole remake business rather irritating, especially when it involves stuff that is still brand new, but I usually try to give them a chance. However I truly hope that the US Being Human will be better then these pictures suggests. Right now they look like they were cosplaying British version, especially the actress who plays "Annie" or whatever she is called in this one.

And lets end with controversial.Doctor Who general spoiler ) This obviously makes a lot of people unhappy. I hope this is just a stunt to lower everyone expectations and it will be a plot point in the future.

I've been watching series 2 of Being Human on BBC America. I loved the first series and I waited for the new one even more then for Doctor Who.

Being Human spoilers up to 2x03 )

And I want to say I ♥ BBC America for showing whole episodes despite the fact that it means it takes an hour and 15 minutes for every one of them.

There was a lot of crying.

Loved George and Nina, Mitchell, Annie and all the secondary characters - Herrick, Josie (Mitchell’s ex), vicar.

The last episode of Being Human was awesome beyond words. It was scary, it was sad and it was funny.

Spoilers for Being Human 1x05 and little bit for Pratchett's Carpe Jugulum )

Just one more episode to go :(

Being Human is truly awesome. This is fast becoming one of my favourite shows.

I love the big stuff. All the character's arc. How each episode concentrates on one of them but still all the storylines move on.

Spoilers for all Being Human episodes )

Too bad there are only two episodes left :(
Hope it gets more

Being Human

I just watched first two episodes of Being Human - a new BBC series about  a ghost, a vampire and a werewolf living together. It is much better then I expected. The summary makes it like a bad joke but it's in fact very serious and dark.

I liked how real the characters seem. How broken they are. How everyday normality is mixing with all the weird they carry with them all the time. I like how they try to be normal and how they fail and succeed. I like there's no easy answers, no diluting of the nature of who they are, no easy ways to avoid their nature. They try to get by day by day. And have to suffer consequences of their actions.

There's gore and nudity but that's about all it has in common with True Blood.  And I must say I enjoyed the fact that it was male nudity. There are guys running around naked all the time. Even in the sex scene the girl was invisible.

This is probably best supernatural series I've seen since Ultraviolet. Hope it succeeds.
