ellestra: (root and shaw)
With all the underwhelming new genre(-ish) shows it's good that the returning ones came back strong.

Person of Interests - it was so good to see them all again. And to finally see where the Machine stuffed them for safekeeping. Harold got to be a teacher and John became a policeman and it's almost perfectly fitted for both of them but they can't deal. Reese barely can keep from outing himself even though his job still lets him save people and crack heads. Finch is afraid to do anything. The funny thing was that poor Shaw who got the worst deal of them all was the one who kept acted the most sane. Good the Machine knows what they all truly need. Shaw was so happy when she got her date. Reese got to have Carter desk and go to homicide and Harold got a real Batcave. They all got a safe communication system and be a team again. It's good to know someone has a plan. But that makes it even more intriguing that we still have no idea what Root does when she's not handing out motivation speeches. We only know now that Miss Groves has a conscience literally talking to her she got pretty preachy.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D - there was a time when I wouldn't believe I'd be so excited to see it back but then it got awesome and so far it continues to be so. The episode opened with flashback to Agent Carter and her Howling Commandos (with Dum Dum Dugan and Jim Morita just to let us know what is coming during the midseason break) so we could learn the origin of 084 designation and meet Reed Diamond's evil Nazi Hydra leader. The moment he mentioned answer to death I knew he will be back. In present day it's been few months since last season and Skye is now May's mini me - in looks, skill and behaviour. I also didn't expect to love her but now she's good at fighting and she's using her hacker skill on the alien writing and I'm cheering her to succeed. Just like I do with when she's facing Ward. Ward is even more creepy now than last season and I was with the Skye when she told him to shut up and only answer questions. There were moments when I almost felt pity for him but then I remembered Eric and Hand and mostly Fitz and and just wished they left him there to rot. And when they reveal the truth about Fitz and Simmons I really, really wanted him to run at that wall fast. I know I shouldn't hate Ward more than Raina - she did ruin lives and kill - but I can't get over what he did to Fitz (he who believed in Ward almost to the end) and I'm glad they don't either. I suppose it shows how invested I became in those characters.

They are all stretched thin - from Coulson who they barely see because he flies (coach) all over the world trying to find more allies to the team trying to keep the most dangerous stuff from SHIELD warehouses from falling into wrong hands. So they got Lucy Lawless's agent character who was undercover when SHIELD fell and she and her team of mercenaries now add man power (and comic book names) to the team. I'm not sure if I believe agent Hartley is dead. She was influenced by an artefact that has something to do with stopping death. Who knows what she'll be able to do. Apparently, this episode was also appeasing all those who wanted more comic book characters to show up - Izzy Hartley, Lance Hunter, Daniel Whitehall and of course the Absorbing Man - all at once. It didn't bother me like Gotham because I never heard about any of them before. This felt more like an nod to fans then frantically making sure "Do you recognise me now, do you?"

Sleepy Hollow - I didn't realise I really got into the series until I saw the new episode. It took me a while to care for this but now I'm finally enjoying watching it instead of just letting the TV to play because there isn't anything else on. Horror always has to work harder for me to care but it finally clicked. The whole thing with them being back at work without mentioning how they got out of the places they were stuck at the end of last season (with the "we don't like to talk about it" talk) felt like a such cop out that I knew it had to be fake and it was. The moment War mentioned how easy it is to deceive I was certain. I was happy they realised that too. War's need to gloat keeps being his undoing. Good Abbie still haven't eaten or drank anything. And Jenny is alive and she kicked ass as always.

Haven has been back to for a while but I'm too pissed off to care anymore. They killed off Jennifer and I said at the end of last season that if they do this to one more female character I'm done and I'm done. I wish evil Audrey kills them all and goes off to live happily ever after with evil sheriff Carter.
ellestra: (tiger)
One of the worst thing about CW is that I want to like their shows because they produce a lot of SF&F stuff but I kept being repealed by all the cheep melodrama, self-obsessed heroes and the worst offender of all protagonist centred morality. I quit both Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries because I couldn't handle it any longer. But I keep watching Arrow because it did unlikely thing - it actually improved.

I was annoyed with Ollie last season - the way he kept admonishing anyone who tried do the same things he did how what they are doing is wrong while going around killing people who usually did nothing but protecting bad guys. Being security for bad guys is not a crime unlike what he did and they had a perfect reason to try to kill him. And then he came off as a horrible hypocrite when he explained to Helena how her killing spree was wrong while his was OK because he had a list.

But he did learn and I find him much more likeable this season. It also help he does has have a team now - I just love both Felicity and Diggle and they make Ollie a more relatable character. I loved when they went for him to the Island because that what friends do. And the whole cover conversation about secretaries, coffee and black drivers was priceless. I also like Sarah - I always suspected she would return but I didn't expected recast so glaringly obvious (it still feels slightly ridiculous but it also explains why they made Laurel blonder this season). And the Island flashbacks are always fun.

The only thing I don't like about this season is the way they sidelined and make Laurel unlikeable. She suffers from a typical problem of a character who doesn't know the secret - it always makes them look stupid and/or wrong - and I'm afraid she would become this show's Lana Lang - hated because delaying romance for plot reasons requires her to be left out.

I'm still watching Haven but I'm not sure why. Its problem with introducing new female characters and killing them off (same for the black ones, really) became more and more problematic over the years. I was happy for a moment when this season started and it miraculously turned out that Jordan wasn't dead (despite all the gun wounds) but we all know how that turned out. Add to this the fact that they introduced Duke's new brother for the obvious purpose of him going serial killer psycho (they even got Dexter's brother to play him to make it obvious enough and then he uses Dexter body disposal method) so Duke could kill him and destroy his own trouble so he cannot stop what is happening now. And all we see from Wade killing spree are the women he kills.

The whole Audrey and Nathan love story became this tragic soulmate thing that makes them both unlikeable jerks (especially Natahn). It's hard to disagree with Jordan assessment of Nathan actions and that makes me hate her being killed off even more. The only person who behaves like a responsible adult who is Duke and it's weird to looking back to think that he would turn out to be the good guy in this whole mess.

And then there are all the abandoned story lines - like noone cares what happened to the son of Sarah and Nate - the very Colorado Kid that is behind all this mess. Or random changes of coroners. You can see I'm nitpicking now - sure sign I'm fed up and everything bugs me in the wrong way. I just can't any more and even Colin Ferguson being ridiculously evil can't make it any better.

The fact that they introduce new female character doesn't help either as she is 1. love interest for Duke (look how that worked out for Evi) and 2. guess what is her storyline now that the barn thing is over (if you guessed the search for birth parents you get nothing - by now is way to obvious). But just for the record - I'm suspecting Jennifer to be a daughter of Audrey's previous incarnation - Lucy (maybe with Chief Wuornos) - or something like that and that's why she is connected to barn and agent Howard put her for adoption. I'm also expecting her to die - how can we ever let go of the triangle.

American Horror Story - The Coven is about bunch of witches this season and I find it surprisingly entertaining. The first season was interesting but the second wasn't and I stopped watching half way through but this one added both Kathy Bates and Angela Basset so I came back. It still has some iffy elements - but people much better qualified then me are talking about it. I just wanted to say that while I find their use of rape and racial abuse awful I think it's good that they provoked all this discussion (and some of the things shown are straight from headlines). The fact that the show runners just love going overboard for a snap moment or cool visuals even if that doesn't make any sense (except for sex dream logic) and general fetishisation of everything they can is at least annoying and most often despicable.

The preformances of Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and Angela Basset's are great and the confrontation's between them are even better. They are all despicable in their own way but obviously Kathy Bate's one is the worst because she is plays a real, historical character who were exactly as bad as they say and the worst part of the show is when they make us care about her. The best parts are connected to Fiona's fight to stay in power and inability to come to terms with getting old and her war with Marie Laveau. And all the gifs. And there are also Frances Conroy and Patti Lupone who are also both fun to watch.

My favourites among the new generation are Nan and Queenie. I especially love Nan's confidence. I wish one of them was the new supreme. And if not them then the Lilly Rabe's character - the resurrection witch. But I'm pretty sure it will turn out to be Zoe as it's usually the most bland, PoV character who is special.

For now I enjoy the zombies and a Frankenstein monster - the magic version and witches in black and wearing hats.

I'm behind on Revolution and I probably won't bother to go back. It's plot is even less coherent then last season and that was bad. I also hate how just took back the whole power is back thing and substituted it with nanobots are obsessed with the Google guy now. Deaths, betrayals and sudden personality shifts seem to come without a rhyme or reason and I can't even make myself care. I'm sure that we get magical nanobot healing for everyone soon - it seems we already get almost no wound infection problems even though antibiotics expired a decade ago.

Once Upon a Time - should really finish with the whole Peter Pan/search for Henry storyline. I was expecting Peter Pan to be Rumpel's father (who isn't family on this show?) for few episodes now and everyone running around in circles in fake jungle isn't making this any more exciting. The best episode this season was the one back in Storybroke and it was a "lets all be friends" type of story with children cartoon level of plot depth. I don't know how much more of characters making disappointed faces at each other while doing nothing constructive I can take. And then when they do something it's like kindergardeners were picking those choices. Neal distrusting Rumple so Peter Pan can take Henry again. Fight between Neal and Hook for a lighter (and Emma - generally the whole triangle thing is extremely badly handled and with their level of family connections also sort of creepy in a soap opera level). All of the rescue attempts with characters randomly sulking off in a different direction every now and then. They just need some better threats and most of all better writing. You cannot go forever just on the "how did they reimagined this Disney character" curiosity.

Grim has become once again a wessen of the week episode and even though I liked the last one I'm only really interested with the Renard family plot (both Captain schemes and Adalind quest).

Elementary is also so good now - I love how Joan gets better and better at her detective skills (she caught Sherlock and her friend and the whole London trip was about her solving things) and I'm intrigued by Mycroft (I didn't suspect Rhys Ifans could look so good poshed up). I suspected Mycroft to be behind the whole father thing and I knew he has some ulterior motives. The whole thing couldn't just be about reconciliation with Sherlock - that's not how Holmeses work. But I enjoy his interactions with both his brother and Joan and I'll be waiting for him to come back. After all this is the arc for this season and I want to know who he was talking with.

I still love Person of Interest but I'll write about it after the current arc ends.

I watch Scandal and love every dramatic chipmunk moment of it even if half of them makes no sense - like the whole Olivia parents mess. I don't care about the romance too much but if pressed I'm TeamJake just because I'm tired of the whole back and forth co-dependant thing with Fitz - they should quit each other through detox like drugs.

I'm still watching Revenge even if it also doesn't make sense. Is Nolan still rich or not - and if all these giant billion dollar companies tanked what with the global economy? Pretending neither terrorist attack nor the Initiative has ever happened. Or the baby. Trying to make us hate Aidan so people would be back to Emily/Jack ship. Etc. etc. But I want to see what !Emily's big plan is all about this time and if she can at least nail one Grayson.

Oh, and I love The Good Wife this season. I didn't know watching the characters we love going at each other throats is going to be so much fun. It is awesome but I'm a little sad about Diane and losing the Illinois Supreme Court nomination. I wonder if this become a part of the ethics war Melissa George's character starts with Peter (she acts like she really wants him to trip on something, I wonder why?).

Once Upon a Time - In the Name of the Brother

Everyone wondered when we'll get to see Star Wars on OUaT now that Disney owns it and today we got the answer. I literally LOLed at the phone ringtone. They just couldn't pass the opportunity, could they?

I wish it was actually Henry who came to look for Regina. I hate they basically left her to Kora.

I like we got a to know dr. Frankenstein better. He certainly became more of a person instead of just a way to move plot. I loved his talk with Red. Frankenstein and werewolf - I think I saw a movie like that. I loved how they the repeatedly said Frankenstein was not the monster - someone's pet peeve, perhaps? The only thing that bothered me is that apparently no one told Emma and Snow anything that happened while they were gone. These people seriously need to learn how to communicate.

They finally realised people came from different worlds - Hatter was in Wonderland, Frankenstein in Black and White. I wonder what it means.

I also wonder what happened to the brother. Victor doesn't kill him again (at least not yet). Did he stay on the other side? Regina had Daniel's body - would Gerhard's get to Maine too?

But what I really want to know is what the globe showed to Rumpel that he decided to bring Emma with him (he was planning to go alone just a day before). Does he know about Henry?

Haven - Thanks for the Memories

Look they once again killed all the new recurring characters. I can no longer even pretend it's OK. That everyone beside main triangle (and Teagues brothers) just die (or go away) because there is Dwight and the new coroner. And Chris was one of the few people who left for a better future instead of disappearing (like the last coroner) or loosing all memories (which like Sarah and Lucy knows is a lot of like dying). It's not that I want any of them to die - I like them all - it's that in this season we had 4 main character deaths (Arla the skinwalker counts too) and it was 3 women and a black guy. Not to mention that Howard might be really dead too (another black guy) but apparently James gets too live (guess how he looks like). I sometimes feel like no other women besides Audrey are allowed to be on the show for more then few episodes and the reason Haven is so white is because it is deadly to other races.

Then there was the whole thing with Nathan and Sarah. I know they implied it but I was really hoping they wouldn't go there. Generally Nathan was kind of awful person this season and I had to fight not to start disliking him completely. His treatment of Duke, Jordan and even Audrey (I know better attitude) just got to me in a bad way.

I think the only high points were the barn (I like worldbuilding stuff like that) and Duke (from getting James to respecting Audrey wishes). And Audrey - I still can forgive Audrey almost anything.

Nikita - Intersection

Sonia is not dead. After watching Haven, this was what made me feel all better inside. And, of course Larry Haberman was the mole, I knew it from the start.

Alex drug use was found out. Finally. I was afraid it would end up in her screwing up badly or having psychotic reaction. You know how it's usually is. I prefer this - she admitted it and then saved the day regardless. This is why I love this show.

Nikita cut off Michael's hand! In promo he's becoming a Star Wars character and Disney sues.

I was afraid Fringe would devolve into silly treasure hunt but they do not seem to really care about that. Instead they just hit you where it hurts. I didn't expect them to kill off Etta last week. Or at least not so soon. She was awesome and competent and she never gave up. This made my conviction that the solution to Observer invasion will involve time travel and resetting the Universe (again) even stronger (I though it from the first time we saw the invasion last season). After this week episode I'm even more convinced of that. I think that - one - Observers' future is so devastated one more black hole means nothing - two - but that time wormhole will let our heroes go and stop Observers. In other news - Peter is becoming an Observer! And it was just a con stunt! Now that promo reminded me of the Dark City.

Haven really got the fandom railed with the Friday episode. The way they love to stir the shipping wars and keep all the ships alive and kicking makes me LOL. Sweet. Obviously Nathan will be brought back to life so I'm not to worried about that. I was more shocked by the fact that Colorado Kid was Sara's child.

I was expecting Tommy to either work for or be the bolt gun killer after that first episode. However, now I think it isn't Tommy. The real Tommy died in that motel room and the killer shapeshifted into him and took his place. That's why he change his mind and stayed.

My other unfounded speculation (just from what I saw in the next week promo). Audrey doesn't say she always loved Nathan she says it to Colorado Kid. She doesn't shoot Claudia Black. James Cogan is the shapeshifter (his father trouble) and she shoots him. Lets see next week how close to the truth I get.

Once Upon the Time was full of revelations too. Family revelations. We finally know who is Henry's father. We finally got Emma's flashback (I liked how this time present action was fairytale land and flashbacks were real world). We know what happened - how they met, why she went to jail, why he left her, why she is so distrusting. So many explanations. Now, I just want them to tell us Charming's name. Only mister Booth became somewhat creepy stoker or maybe Rumpel light - manipulating people's lives for his own goal. I wonder what he used to have in that box to make Neal go with the whole plan. And what about that dream?
ellestra: (once upon a time)
The new season of a lot of stuff I watch started but I've been concentrating on other things so here are my thoughts about the first (and sometime second) episodes before I forget.

I liked the future episode of Fringe last season but the first one of this was fairly disjointed and was telling us about a lot of things that happened in a kind of infodump (September, plan, Olivia) instead of showing. If it wasn't for Walter rescue it would be also quite boring.

I liked today's episode much more. There was more coherence and I liked the difference between Etta's detachment and Olivia's caring. One have lived through all that happened and she is right and that's why she's still alive. The other still lives by the old rules and that's dangerous in this word but it is also a reminder of what the resistance is fighting for. She sees the loyalist as a person - just a guy who feeds the birds. Etta cannot have that luxury but she still lets him go. I really liked this episode as it showed both how that future change even the good guys but also why our heroes had to sleep over it. Although the end with tape quest was kind of ridiculous. Reminded me of an old time video game.

I really liked the last two episodes of Haven. Nate's misguided protectiveness that turned him into complete asshole. Duke who cannot escape his destiny despite trying his best to find something else to do because sometimes it's really saving people (but it is destroying him). Audrey being empathic and pragmatic at the same time and ability to concentrate on the saving as many lives as possible, helping all she can help even if it means doing something wrong. I loved the way she dealt with dogs last week, I had the same thought about Duke but I loved that she didn't pressure him and I really like her slow friendship with the shrink (I hope she's going to last unlike previous new female characters).

I noticed that the troubles get more and more awful for people who have them. Where is the old time solution of just calming them down and/or making them leave town? We don't even see much of Audrey nullifying powers anymore. I'm pretty sure this is to make the pressure for Duke to start killing. I also think Audrey learning she will disappear is to make her more OK with that. Someone else who can make people stop. I'm also pretty sure The season will be about consequences of that.

The beginnings of new seasons of Once Upon a Time and Revenge were both awesome. !Emily is back to her scheming ways. She drowns herself to remember. She has a reason why she let the white haired guy live. If I wasn't so scared for !Amanda I would be perfectly happy.

I loved the reunion of the Charming family. From Snow and her Prince (we are supposed to learn his real name soon) to meeting with their daughter as their daughter to realising they have grandson. I loved how they feel joy and relief but Emma is confused and just not prepared to deal with this. On one hand she understands that they were forced to do that and she learned to liked them as friends but she has that great hole in her for all those years she was abandoned. Of course the joy doesn't last long but I loved how they decided to save Regina for Henry because even though he spent last season telling everyone she is the Evil Queen she is still his mom - the one who took care of him his whole life. And she does love him as he is the only one she cares more about then her revenge.

I also love the fact that Regina couldn't have any magic until Emma touched her. She makes the magic come back. Like Jefferson said she can make it real. Only now she's stuck in Fairyland and the people have to deal with all of it without her.

I also loved the reveal that Aurora, Mulan and Philip were now of Fairyland and not the past (although it was very Lost-y). The thing with the wraith was misleading because it happened out of order but it made the realisation more fun. I hope Snow, Emma, Mulan and Aurora have many great adventures together before they save Fairyland (or save people there).

OK, enough. So shortly. I liked the new episodes of Scandal but I must admit in the show with so many awesome women David Rosen is becoming my favourite character. I also loved the Person of Interest new episodes (especially the dog) but I must admit I empathise with Root. I have very strong feelings about her cause and even though I don't like her views of all humans I admit I get where she's coming from. I also think she's pretty badass so ♥

I think I forgot to mention yesterday that my watch broke few of days ago. I'm used to having a watch on all the time.  I've been using a spports watch that one can bathe and swim in for years. A cheap one as I tend to hit everything with it so it doubles as wrist protector. I never take it off. I had serious problem with keeping track of time these past few days. Luckily I just got an replacement.

Meanwhile in his new book Stephen King wants to make the world a scarier place and put the scary back into vampires. I don't know how it'll go with all the romance fantasy (also called urban fantasy) novels writers. Who would their heroines fall in love in? Werewolves?

Neil Gaiman shared his photos from the latest visit to his homeland showing off with his dinner with sir Terry and stealing TARDIS. Too bad that Weeping Angel didn't get him. Or maybe good if he was planning another book with Pratchett.

And those in need of cheap entertainment can go to Whatever and see Scalzi baiting the crowds by reviewing Atlas Shrugged. He is however policing the comments so there shouldn't be too much wank.

And I was right. Haven 1x12 Spoilers )

Syfy shows

The last episode of Eureka was fun. Eureka Sqee ) Stop torturing Jo. Or I'll stop liking you. And of all Syfy shows on now I like you most.

I'm kind of watching Warehouse 13 but I'm not really into it. I don't know if it's because I didn't watch from the beginning or because I find Pete annoying and Myka boring but it just doesn't work for me. I think I watch mostly for secondary characters: Claudia, Mrs. Frederic, occasional regent.Small W13 spoiler )

I finally liked an episode of Haven. I kept watching it because  it's after Eureka and I like Audrey Parker but it's not enough. Audrey is sarcastic and smart and exactly the kind of character I'm drawn to but she is the only one. There isn't many regular characters beside her and not only all of them are male but they are also bland. Till now I found them so boring I couldn't even remember their names. I knew there was the sheriff, his son who couldn't feel pain, the jerk and two funny newspaper editors but I only have been able to tell them apart because the actors look really different. I think it's because they are trying to make everyone in Haven part of the mystery that surrounds the town and they gets so mysterious that they lack personalities at all. This is especially true for the guy that follows Audrey and sometimes delivers exposition due to being local.

Small Haven arc spoiler )

But somehow it started to grow in me. first in last episode the cause was mundane and in this we had moments and bonding between non-Audrey characters and I was actually intrigued by the plot.  And I finally remembered that the sheriff's son's name is Nathan. I might be even waiting for the next episode.

Irrelevant trivia: These 3 shows heave leads who stared together in a tv movie. Joanne Kelly, Colin Ferguson and Lucas Bryant. They were sort off love triangle. The Canadian actor pool :P
ellestra: (Default)
Eureka started yesterday and was so much fun I watched it twice. I didn't realize how much I missed the denizens of Eureka. Jack, Allison and Henry. Jo and Fargo.

Spoilers for Eureka 4x01 )

It all reminds me of the end of season 1. I wonder if they will try to live with the changes or try to fix it.

I also watched the premiere of Haven. It wasn't bad but it wasn't very good either. It certainly wasn't gripping.

None of the heroes was really memorable. The main mystery of the origins of Audrey Parker is not all that interesting either.

Small spoilers for Haven 1x01 )

I will give it couple more episodes but it doesn't seem like something I'll like. The trailers for this were more interesting then the episode itself. And after a day I don't even remember much of it. Maybe it's because I've seen too many stories about some sinister supernatural conspiracy and small towns (Happy Town, Persons Unknown). Maybe it was a bad idea to pair it with Eureka. After over the top comedy of it Haven seem little bland.
