Book series

George R.R. Martin posted a chapter from Wolves of Winter. It's Arianne's PoV so one of those I'm actually interested in. Of course it doesn't mean it won't get rewritten or that next book is near. He kept posting chapters for the whole five years of writing of each of 2 last novels. Anyway, I really like the picture.

Speaking of pretty - you can buy a print of the Michel Whelan's cover for A Memory of Light. The Wheel of Time series finally came to end after 20 years and you can also read the very spoilery reaction post on tor.com. I did as I don't have the book (and I won't buy the hardcover) but I want to know what happened (I spent to many years on it not to want to know the ending). I promised that I will read the remaining books after the last one comes out and it seems like it's time to do it. I think the last one I read was 10 or 9.

So the final of the 2012 Suvudu Cage Match is between is between Moiraine Damodred and Kylar Stern. I'm sure almost noone expected Kylar to go that far which is a part of the fun of these. I never even heard about that series and now I'm interested. I's still little bummed about Rake and I feel really sad about Granny. It would be so awesome if this final was between two female characters. This was a good year in that as both the Fandom March Madness and the strictly SFF version championships were women only. Even the io9 The Worst Science Fiction Movie polls went for the female domination. The Battlefield Earth won over Catwoman as we all predicted it would and, since here winner is looser, it's lack of any prominent female character (not that it had any characters) and Catwoman being one might be seen as a woman win too. So, I'm bummed his Suvudu doesn't end up with Granny vs. Moiraine but I hope Moraine will prevail. She is loosing now but I'm sure WoT fandom is big enough to propel her to victory.

It's not that I hate male characters (I voted Anomander all the way). It's just I see fandom hate for them so often I'm happy with any signs of love and popularity I get. This is even more true with Wheel of Time fandom which I never fully got into because of the female character bashing. It was one of the very first internet fandoms I looked into and I was shocked how much hate there was for women. They were all badly written, unrealistic, stupid and ungrateful. Some of the criticisms of the character writing about Jordan women I even agreed with but the seeing the same people praise the male characters made me just give up. I had problems with how Jordan written his characters and most of them made me want to shake them and tell them to get a grip and start working together but why did they all think that he could write males any better I never understood. From my point of view nooone needed shaking till they get it together as much as Rand (the main hero for those who don't know). Moiraine was one of few people who made him bearable. She was my favourite character from the beginning and, even though I moved on to shinier stuff, I'm still her fan. I hope she wins. She really deserves this.

Disgusting

I have food poisoning. With all the symptoms usually associated with it. I'll never be able to understand people who do that to themselves voluntarily.

There is uproar about the last volume of Wheel of Time won't be volume. It will be three. I always knew there was no way for all the plots to be resolved in one book and for a long time it was suggested it'll be split in two. So it's not the annoying part. The annoying part is that the series publisher Tor decided to split the book in three claiming it was too big for binding and to be marketed. The reasons were all bogus. It turned out that they requested the split in three to publish the first one this year to make their results for 2009 look better. It seems like even Brandon Sanderson (who wrote the book substituting for late Robert Jordan) is annoyed.

Robert Jordan, the author of Wheel of Time series, died earlier this year before finishing his monumental saga. He knew he was dieing so he did his best not to leave fans stranded and did all the notes necessary to finish the series. Detailed all the main events etc. So for past few months the search for someone to write the final volume (12th!) was on. It's no more.
Brandon Sanderson ([personal profile] mistborn) has been chosen to finish writing the final novel - The Memory of Light.
Good. Even though I drifted towards darker worlds I still want to know how it's going to end. Who dies (if anyone dies), who gets their happily ever after. And with just one volume to end it all there won't be time for dress descriptions and braid tugging. I hope.
Well, maybe just a little bit - it wouldn't be WoT without it. :P
BTW Brandon Sanderson will try to mimic RJ's writing style. I suppose he has to - some parts have already been written by the man himself. I wonder how hard it is. To write like someone else. Or alike.  To me it's the most difficult and frightening part.
It's like copying the painting. I'm no good at that. Always start to do it my own way. Takes hard work not to stray. Like with this post ;P
